Sanchez is a renown Latin percussionist and bandleader, perhaps best-known for his songs “El Shing-A-Ling” and “Besame Mama.” The 63-year-old’s love of traditional Latin jazz artists (like Machito, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader, and Mongo Santamaria) began at a young age, Sanchez recently told Up on the Sun.

“Kids in the neighborhood would come over and I’d put on Cal Tjader or Tito Puente records, and they’d look at me like I was nuts,” he says with a laugh. “Like, ‘Why do you like that shit? That’s old people’s music.'”
