A verdict was returned Friday in the case of 39-year-old Daniel Gukeisen, a Tempe attorney accused of fatally stabbing a 22-year-old Arizona State University student in 2008. Gukeisen, however, didn’t bother to show up.
The proceedings went on without him, though, and he was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Garrett Hohn.
Gukeisen surfaced later that day, the Tempe Police Department says, outside of the Fourth Avenue Jail, where he’d gone to surrender in in preparation for his probable upcoming jail or prison sentence.
Gukeisen was facing up to 10 1/2 years in prison, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office says, but he was also eligible for probation — so skipping court probably wasn’t the best move.

Hohn was killed on September 6, 2008, as he was walking with a friend past Gukeisen’s Tempe townhouse.
Hohn and Gukeisen began arguing — an disagreement that ended when Gukeisen stabbed the college senior repeatedly.
Hohn was pronounced dead at a Valley hospital less than an hour later.
Because he skipped his court appearance, County Attorney Bill Montgomery says he’ll ask for an enhanced sentence for Gukeisen.
