The next time 33-year-old Tanya Leathers, a.k.a. Tanya Nareau, is rummaging around her house looking for something of value to trade for a gun, she may want to consider something other than her 2-year-old daughter.
Leathers was sentenced today in Maricopa County Superior Court to two concurrent 1.5-year prison sentences after pleading guilty to one count of unlawful sale of a child, and one count of misconduct involving weapons after she tried to trade her 2-year-old baby to a family member in exchange for a gun.
You see, Leathers is a convicted felon, and unable to purchase a gun herself, so she called a relative and tried to arrange a swap: Leathers would hand over her daughter, and the relative would hand over a gun.
Leathers made the initial offer in a phone call to the relative. Following the phone call, Leathers showed up at the relatives workplace to make the trade. She handed over her daughter, the relative didn’t hand over the gun — rather, he called the cops.

It’s unclear why Leathers felt she needed a gun, but she told MCSO deputies after her arrest that she didn’t think she could adequately raise her child and the girl would be better off with someone who could.
Considering adoption agencies don’t typically trade guns for babies, the thought of going through the proper legal channels to give up her kid, apparently, never crossed her mind.
Leathers’ child has since been turned over to family members who presumably know children shouldn’t be used as currency.
