Attention rock and alternative acts around Arizona: The Phoenix Zoo wants you for 2012’s Rock the Zoo event.

“We’re looking for rock and alternative acts,” says zoo PR & Marketing Manager Linda Hardwick. “In the past, we’ve done ’80s music, but this year we really wanted to involve the community, and make it a local event. So we put out a call to all local bands.”

Entries are being accepted until Wednesday, December 14. The Phoenix Zoo Event Staff will then choose 20 finalists, who will be notified via email and phoenixzoo.org beginning January 2, 2012 for public vote. Public voting ends on January 20, 2012. The top two band will be notified on January 23, 2012, and will play the Rock the Zoo event on Friday, March 30.

The winning bands will share the stage with sponsor SRP’s Second Shift, a band made up of entirely SRP employees (yes, this is a real band — Hardwick saw them at Country Thunder and described them as “very good”). In addition to rocking alongside a band that probably gets the juice at its practice space comped, the winning band will receive a cash prize of $500.

And now, an unnecessary, punny video from band that WOULD fit in well at a zoo. (Ba-zing! Groan.)
