Chef Matt Carter’s popular, modern Latin restaurant now has a home in the East Valley. The Mission’s third location is now open at Gilbert’s Epicenter at Agritopia.

The Mission, which has locations in Old Town Scottsdale and Kierland Commons, is known for its candle-lit, mission-style ambiance and signature tableside guacamole, whole-roasted pig brunch and an agave-centered bar program.

The expansion to Gilbert was announced on social media in December 2024. At Epicenter, Carter’s restaurant succeeds the Asian fusion restaurant Belly, which shuttered at the end of 2024. Originally, The Mission was anticipated to open in late 2025. Now, the restaurant is ready to welcome diners.

“We’re beyond thrilled to finally open our doors in the East Valley with our very first Gilbert location,” Carter said in a press release. “This has been a long time coming, and we’ve already felt an incredible amount of excitement and support from the community.”

This latest outpost of The Mission joins Carter and business partner Brian Raab’s portfolio of restaurants that also includes Zinc Bistro and Fat Ox. The Gilbert location of The Mission is open daily for lunch and dinner, with weekend brunch to follow.

The restaurant’s menu features duck carnitas empanadas, a chipotle Caesar salad, pozole, tacos served on housemade corn tortillas and chorizo porchetta cooked over a grill fueled by pecan and mesquite wood. The Mission’s bar offers margaritas, signature cocktails and agave spirit flights.

Carter and Raab tapped design firm Mendil + Meyer, who also designed The Mission in Old Town and Fat Ox, to transform the space. A front dining room, filled with large curved windows, evokes an airy patio feel. Meanwhile, the main bar and dining area take on the darker, more dramatic design of its sibling restaurant in Old Town. The Gilbert location glows with crystal chandeliers and a Himalayan salt brick wall. The new restaurant also features a private dining room that can accommodate up to 40 people.

“We can’t wait to share The Mission experience with guests,” Carter said, “and create a space where people can come together and celebrate.”
