It’s about time Phoenix sees some serious mural love. In the interest of giving credit to their artists and because we’re losing track of the times we’ve said, “Woah, when did that go up?”, we bring you Mural City, a series on the murals springing up around town — their artists, their hosts and their inspirations.

Artists: Francisco Garcia, Alban Fernandez, Francisco Guerrero, Averian Chee, Edgar Fernandez, and Jeff Slim

Location: Universal Hair Salon, 925 Grand Ave

The only noises coming from behind Universal Hair Salon are the sounds of spray cans being shaken, sprayed and tossed aside. The six young men painting on the parking lot walls aren’t causing a scene — there’s no loud music and there’s barely a conversation above a mumble. They say they’re leaving the noise making up to the mural.

When news happens, Phoenix New Times is there —
Your support strengthens our coverage.

We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If New Times matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.

$30,000

Francisco Garcia calls the collaborative mural a study in Chicano and Southwest culture. When the mural is done, the group hopes it will show solidarity between cultures and against current cultural and political conflicts.
