Volume 19 of Hi-Fructose, a quarterly contemporary arts magazine, hasn’t hit the stands, but when it does, you can keep an eye out for the work of local creative, Colin Chillag.

Chillag’s a local painter who recently departed from his well-known cartoon style with his portrait series of residents at Westward Ho.

New Times’ Kathleen Vanesian reviewed Chillag’s solo show, which featured the portraits pictured above, at Pravus in October. She writes:

“The mostly unfinished paintings are raw, uncensored, and meticulously rendered and veer off into abstraction bordering on defacement … Realism and abstraction battle each other on every canvas; on some, it’s merely a quiet conflict, on others, an apocalyptic showdown.”

Check out a preview of the issue here and more about his upcoming show at 5&6, opening April 7, after the jump.

5&6 Gallery will be hosting another solo show by Chillag that will include new work and collaborations with Joshua Rhodes and David Quan.

According to Rhodes, the exhibition will be “unique, diverse, at times, bizarre vision that has garnered Chillag local respect as well as acclaim from Los Angeles to New York City.”

The show’s opening reception is from 6 to 9 p.m. at 5&6’s new location, 7051 E 5th Ave, Suite E, 85251.
