On January 28, the Musical Instrument Museum is partnering with the American Chinese Arts and Culture Exchange Association to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
According to Courtney Tjaden, Events and Volunteer Manager at the museum, there will be a number of events and performances that pay tribute to 2012, the year of the dragon.
The performances, which start at 10 a.m. and continue through 5 p.m., include traditional Chinese folk songs, dance, marital arts, and original artwork. Artist Fan Rong (a.k.a. Li Cheng) will be live painting and selling artwork until 4 p.m.. MIM staff will also host dragon mask-making, Chinese calligraphy, and origami classes for kids.
In addition to the events of the day, there will be docent-led mini-tours of the museum where guests can learn about the Chinese New Year and view the dragon puppet on display. And in the museum’s cafe, guests can check out the Chinese-inspired menu, which includes west lake beef soup, sweet and sour pork, steamed fruit cake, and Chinese almond cookies from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m..

Tjaden says the museum worked closely with community partners to ensure the event is true to Chinese tradition and is an opportunity for the community to experience and learn more about Chinese New Year.
