The City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office will host Robert Melikian, author of Vanishing Phoenix tomorrow, June 2, at Phoenix City Hall.
Melikian’s book laments stories and photos of buildings no longer standing in Phoenix including the Dorris Opera House, Baker & Bayless Grocery, the
Maricopa Creamery Co. and the Donofrio Building.
The brown bag comes at a heated time for building demolition; The vintage Ramada Inn (formerly the Sahara Motor Hotel) at First and Polk streets went under the bulldozer on May 13. Plans for the space include an expansion of the Sheraton Hotel parking lot and a new home for the ASU Law School.

Melikian is no stranger to old Arizona architecture — his family owns and operates the Hotel San Carlos, a downtown Phoenix landmark. The historian grew up in Arizona and has also published a book about his family’s hotel.
He’ll join the City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office at noon on the first floor of Phoenix City Hall (Assembly Rooms B and C). For more information, call 602-261-8699.
