By Benjamin Leatherman Black Moses, 1942-2008. RIP. The Grim Reaper’s had something of a hard-on for African-American is the entertainment industry as of late. In the past few weeks, death incarnate has taken a pretty staggering list of talented mofos into the great beyond: comedian Bernie Mac, blues guitarist Phil…
Better Than: Any other act that has played the Super Bowl in this millennium. See more photos from Tom Petty’s concert at Jobing.com Arena in our slideshow. The arena concert is often an impersonal experience. Paying top dollar for a seat with a brilliant view of a jumbotron hardly makes…

On a recent Friday night, I’m sitting poolside on the rooftop of the Hotel San Carlos in downtown Phoenix. I’ve got an ice cold Kiltlifter in one hand, a Marlboro in the other, and an earful of local prog rockers The Wizards of Time, who are playing live on the…
In a parallel universe that gets everything wrong, Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover would be capping the Melvins’ first quarter-century mulling over whether to wear tuxes or L.A. Dodgers jerseys to their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Melvins albums would’ve become progressively slicker and more pedestrian over…
Here are two situations you have probably found yourself in if you (a) have a penis, and (b) are/were not in a fraternity: Number one: While at a friend’s generally lame party (he just played Journey), you meet a girl who looks as bored as you. She’s beautiful, and that…
Anal Cunt has got to be the only “joke band” that’s still recording and touring 20 years after its tongue-in-cheek (and anywhere else you can imagine) genesis. Since playing its first show in the Newton, Massachusetts home of founder Seth Putnam’s mother, Anal Cunt has released innumerable grindcore records with…
It’s ironic that consistency, longevity, and predictability have come to be the hallmarks of “true punk,” but that’s where we are more than three decades after Johnny Rotten blew his nose all over those things. As Jello Biafra recently sang, there are all these bands singing their “hits from the…
What do you call a pretty good surf band that suddenly drops the hodad act and discovers a gift for raw, catchy rock ‘n’ roll tunes? The Boss Martians, that’s who. Like any good power-pop band, the Seattle group is in touch with its record collections: Elvis Costello, the Who,…
It’s going to be something of a busy weekend for DJ Seduce. The Valley’s mixmaster maestro of bossa nova basslines and jazzy globe-trotting jams starts things off by heading up Afro:Baile’s “Summer Sessions” gig at Club Mardi Gras, 8040 East McDowell Road in Scottsdale, on Friday, August 22. The night…
While surf-punk bands like Agent Orange had punks hitting the beach in the ’80s, psychobilly outfit The Cramps brought a darker, sexier side to surf music, as singer Lux Interior flexed his vocal muscles, all Elvis-on-acid-like, over guitarist Poison Ivy’s oozing, springy rhythms. This 31-minute album is arguably the best…
This week’s “Flier of the Week” comes from Tempe indie rockers The Maine. After a long summer tour with Boys Like Girls and Good Charlotte, the band will be playing a hometown show on August 30. Check it.
By Lilia Menconi Check our slideshow for more of this nonsense. We’re not going to make any tired observations about how Mondays suck big-time. Okay, maybe we’ll point out just one: It’s the toughest day of the week but, somehow, it’s the least socially acceptable evening to go out and…
Believe it or not, Arizona has always been a haven for heavy metal icons. From the earliest days of heavy metal, the Valley of the Sun has housed and spawned some of the most influential acts in the genre: Flotsam and Jetsam, Sacred Reich, Megadeth, Soulfly, Linkin Park — hell, our state even has ties to Slayer and Metallica. We’re not sure if it’s the purgatory-worthy heat, the mystic mountains, or the minions of metalheads here, but one thing’s for certain: more famous metal musicians live or have lived in Arizona than the average Joe realizes. The 14 most noteworthy Arizona metal men are listed below, in no particular order.
This week’s review is on the new CD from Native American pow-wow drum group Black Lodge. The group is signed to Canyon Records, the oldest and most successful record label in the state of Arizona, which specializes in Native American music.

By Thomas Bond The Dandy Warhols …Earth to The Dandy Warhols… (Beat the World) The sixth studio album from The Dandy Warhols returns them to the indie fold from whence they sprang in the mid-’90s, as it’s being released on their own Beat the World label today. It’s much less…
Matt Pryor and The Terrible Twos: Wednesday, August 20, at Modified Arts By Clay McNear Once upon a time, rock ’n’ roll was about bad dudes singing about bad shit, and it was very, very bad for you. One of my formative images was punk progenitor Iggy Pop stage-diving onto…
