The Arizona Diamondbacks once again tasted defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, falling to the defending World Series champs by a score of 5-2.
As bad as it was for the D-backs to rack up yet another loss — their eighth defeat in the last 10 games — during the midst of a pennant race, there was at least one bright spot: Paul Goldschmidt’s 456-foot home run in the fourth inning.
It was one of the scant number of hits that Arizona got off the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright (11-10, 3.87 ERA) during the game as the ace struck out five batters and gave up only two runs during his six innings of work.
According to Major League Baseball, Goldy’s solo jack is the longest moonshot ever hit by an opposing team at the new version of Busch Stadium, a record which probably lessened the sting for the 24-year-old phenom as he watched his team flush continue to flush their postseason chances down the crapper. Not that he wasn’t trying his damndest to pull off a win, hacking away a first strike fastballs from Wainwright, which resulted in a few pop outs.

Goldschmidt even succeeded when he was failing last night, as Arizona’s only other run of the game came when his grounder into a double play during the sixth inning gave Aaron Hill an opening to dash into the dish from third base.
The rest of the D-backs lineup was largely unspectacular and unproductive against Wainwright and the St. Louis bullpen, save for a few paltry hits from Hill, Jason Kubel, and Miguel Montero. Justin Upton and Chris Young had zilch at the plate (natch) and starting pitcher Joe Saunders (6-9, 3.70) gave up seven of the Cardinals’ eight hits and all five of their runs over the course of six innings.
The Diamondbacks will try to salvage at least one win in St. Louis during tonight’s finale of the three-game series. Trevor Cahill (9-10, 3.85 ERA) goes against Kyle Lohse (12-2, 2.72). First pitch is at 5:15 p.m. TV: Fox Sports Arizona. Radio: KTAR 620-AM. More info www.dbacks.com.
