Redemption was in the air last night at Chase Field. Not only did the Arizona Diamondbacks avoid a sweep by the San Francisco Giants with a 3-1 victory, Stephen Drew also rebounded from his recent hitting slump, and pitcher Daniel Hudson continued to justify being traded for Edwin Jackson by securing his fifth win since coming to the team.
Hudson got into trouble early when Giants infielder Freddy Sanchez plopped a 352-foot homer deep into left. The pitcher remained calm, cool, and collected, getting through the next six innings with little problem. His icy attitude also helped him pitch his way out of a tricky situation in the seventh when both Darren Ford and Cody Ross occupied second and third base.
Meanwhile Drew, who has only gone 6 for 33 during the last nine games, broke his unlucky streak with a titanic triple during the third. Kelly Johnson sent the slugger to home plate later in the inning to give the D-Backs a 2-1 lead. Drew also provided an RBI single in the seventh to add another run. (Miguel Montero also had an ribeye double early in the game).
The win broke Arizona’s recent four-game losing streak and allowed them to end their current homestand at 5-4. The team kicks off a 10-game road trip this weekend, starting off on Friday with a visit to Coors Field to face the Colorado Rockies before heading to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. A mere 22 games are left in the 2010 season, which is either good news or bad news, depending on your feelings for the Diamondbacks.
