It’s not as rare as a hail storm in September, but the weather that passed through the Valley on Wednesday afternoon was certainly something to see.

A series of storms — one around 3 p.m. and another a few hours later — passed over parts of Maricopa County, dropping oodles of hail. The National Weather Service issued a series of warnings that cautioned about possible penny-sized hail, but NWS meteorologist Sean Benedict said the agency received reports of quarter-sized hail — that is, roughly an inch in diameter — in at least one instance.

The first storm hit the West Valley near Interstate 10 and 75th Avenue, leaving the highway covered in pea-sized hail pellets. Later, a storm worked its way up from Ahwatukee and Tempe, dropping hail near State Routes 60 and 101.

It’s one thing to watch a storm move across a radar screen. It’s another to see the streets of Phoenix covered in a layer of ice. Thankfully, social media users around the Valley had their phones out and recording.

That’s the kind of ice sighting we like to see. Maybe it’ll finally get rid of all the mosquitoes.
